Good to know

Your first week

Phone access and everyday payments are useful early tasks. What a bank needs to open an account varies by bank and your circumstances, so call the branch and ask what it accepts before visiting. Keep your passport, visa and I-94 records, and your Indian documents, where you can reach them.

Driver license and car

Driver licensing and vehicle registration are handled by the North Carolina DMV (ncdot.gov/dmv). Requirements depend on whether you hold a license from another state or country, so check the DMV’s own page for your situation and book through its official site.

Schools

Use the district that serves your exact home address. Town names and mailing addresses do not guarantee a particular school assignment, so confirm enrollment and assignment directly with the district before you decide where to live.

Groceries, temples and community

Indian groceries, temples, classes and community groups are linked below and in our guides. Use the individual listings for addresses and official links, and see the groups page for associations and community organizations.

Indian passport, OCI and consular help

There is no Indian consulate in Raleigh. For North Carolina residents, passport, OCI and visa services are handled by the Embassy of India in Washington DC, with applications filed through the outsourcing service VFS Global, which lists an Indian Consular Application Centre in Raleigh (see the listing below). Check the official site for the current checklist and fees rather than relying on a forum post.
